WHAT IS THE STAND UP PADDLE SURF?

«STAND UP PADDLE SURF», is an old form of gliding on the water, in which we navigate on a large surfboard, with the use of a paddle to help us move while we stand on the board. By standing on the board at all times, we are able to see the waves before the surfers and we will have a new and complete vision of the sea and the seabed … without doubt one of the main advantages of SUP over surfing. The main difference between both disciplines is that SUP does not need waves, although they are closely related, and it is a very complementary sport for any type of training, including SURF.

HISTORY OF STAND UP PADDLE

Its origin is very old and comes from the Polynesian islands where the natives already practiced this form of surfing . The Hawaiian translation is Ku Hoe He’e NALU; stand up, row, navigate a wave. Popularity as a modern sport has its epicenter in the Hawaiian Islands, where at the beginning of the 2000s, Hawaiian surfers like Dave Kalama, Archie Kalepa and Laird Hamilton began to make SUP as an alternative form of training for the days that they could not be surfing. They were discovering that the Stand Up Paddle Surf allowed them to keep fit for the big days of «tow in surfing», as well as adding new dimensions to their skills.
